Buying gifts online: what to check

Compare the total, not the headline price

Two retailers can list the same watch at the same price and still cost you different amounts once delivery is added. Our comparison tables sort by the total including delivery wherever the retailer tells us its delivery charge.

Personalised gifts usually can't be returned

The 14-day right to cancel an online order doesn't apply to items made to your specification, such as engraved jewellery or a printed name. Check spelling before you order, and check how long the retailer needs to make it: personalised items often take a few extra days before they're dispatched.

Jewellery: look for the hallmark

UK law requires a hallmark on gold over 1g and silver over 7.78g sold as precious metal. 375 means 9ct gold, 750 means 18ct and 925 is sterling silver. When comparing prices, make sure the metal, carat and stone weight match: a cheaper listing is often a lighter or lower-carat version.

Watches: authorised dealers keep the warranty

Manufacturer warranties usually depend on buying from an authorised dealer. Check the exact reference number matches across retailers before comparing prices.

Leave time for delivery

Each offer shows the retailer's delivery cost and stock when we last checked. For a fixed date, check the retailer's own delivery options and cut-off times before you order, especially in December.

Questions

Can I return a personalised or engraved gift?

Usually not. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, goods made to your specification, such as engraved or personalised items, are exempt from the 14-day right to cancel an online order. You still have full rights if the item is faulty or not as described. Check the retailer's returns policy before ordering.

How do I know gold or silver jewellery is genuine?

In the UK, gold items over 1 gram and silver items over 7.78 grams must carry an official hallmark when sold as precious metal. The hallmark shows the maker, the metal and its fineness (for example 375 for 9ct gold or 925 for sterling silver), and the assay office.

Does DealComparer sell these gifts?

No. We compare prices from UK retailers and link to them; you buy from the retailer, who handles delivery and returns. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links. It never changes the price you pay or the order products appear in.

How are these gift ideas chosen?

Every product here is live at a UK retailer with a price we have checked in the last few days. We group products by who they suit, the occasion and the interest based on the product's own details. Retailers can't pay to appear or to rank higher.
