Buying fridges & freezers in the UK: what to check

The energy label states annual energy use in kWh. A fridge freezer runs all year, so a small difference in kWh adds up; product pages show the yearly running cost at the Ofgem price cap.

Compare usable (net) capacity in litres, the fridge/freezer split, and whether it's frost free. Frost-free models don't need manual defrosting.

Check the noise level in dB if the kitchen is open-plan, and whether the door is reversible if your space needs it.

Home Appliances: frequently asked questions

›How much does a fridge freezer cost to run?

Multiply its annual kWh (on the energy label) by your electricity rate. At 26.32p per kWh, the Ofgem cap for October to December 2026, a model using 200kWh a year costs about £52.64 a year.

›What's the difference between net and gross capacity?

Gross is the total internal volume; net (usable) capacity excludes shelves, drawers and other fittings. Compare net capacity between models.
