Compare washing machines on drum size, energy use and spin speed, not just price. A 7–8kg drum suits most couples and small families; 9–10kg helps with bedding and larger households.

Buying washing machines in the UK: what to check

Since March 2021 the energy label runs from A to G and states energy use in kWh per 100 cycles on the eco 40–60 programme. Product pages here turn that figure into a running cost at the current Ofgem price cap, so you can add it to the price when comparing.

Spin speed (1,200–1,600rpm) affects how dry clothes come out; higher speeds cut drying time. Check the noise class (A is quietest) if the machine is near a living area.

Most freestanding machines are about 85cm high and 60cm wide, but depth varies (roughly 50–65cm). Measure your space and use the size check on each product page. Integrated machines fit behind a kitchen door and are usually dearer.

Home Appliances: frequently asked questions

›What does the energy label on a washing machine show?

The current label (since March 2021) shows a class from A to G, energy use in kWh per 100 eco 40–60 cycles, water use per cycle, capacity, programme duration and noise class.

›What size washing machine do I need?

As a rough guide, 7–8kg suits one to three people and 9–10kg suits larger families or regular bedding washes. A bigger drum isn't more efficient if you usually run half loads.
